PREFACE
This book is designed to familiarize the students
taking a first university course in translation with the
essential British historical and cultural background. Part I
succinctly sums up the major historical periods in the
British history. It is divided into 8 units covering the
beginnings of British history up to the Elizabethan Age.
Part II contains 9 units. They are intended to acquaint
the students with some of the most distinguished figures in
British culture, including men of letters, thinkers, scientists
and politicians.
The course is necessarily elementary: but an
elementary course can be more successful in practice than
high-aiming, sophisticated courses which often misfire.
